With a gloomy sky, howling winds, bricks strewn across roads and fallen trees, Sydney remains scarred after a night of wild weather.

Ferry services between Manly and Circular Quay are suspended until at least 2pm due to rough waters, with shuttle buses operating instead.

The Transport Management Centre urged public transport passengers and motorists in Sydney to allow extra travel time today.

Much of the city, particularly the south, was battered and bruised overnight, with roofs ripped off houses and shops, flash flooding and power out in thousands of homes.

The highest wind speed of 127km/h was recorded at the Royal National Park yesterday afternoon, with winds up to 94km/h on Sydney Harbour.

"It was quite blowy," State Emergency Service spokeswoman Becky Gollings said.

The SES received nearly 1000 calls for help, mostly for fallen trees and damaged roofs.

Strong winds tore the roof off a house in Bundeena and the roof off a shop in Bondi, Ms Gollings said.

Bricks were lying on the road outside the clothes shop on Gould Street this morning.

Scaffolding fell on to units in Duncan Street, Maroubra, and several residents were evacuated, Fire and Rescue NSW said.

There was localised flooding in Tempe and Marrickville, while fallen trees and other wind damage was reported in Bondi, Sutherland and Caringbah.

At Bombala, in the far south of the state, three people were rescued after flash flooding trapped them in their house.

Rough seas caused coastal erosion on the northern beaches, while sections of the beach promenade at Batemans Bay were washed way, Ms Gollings said.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning this morning for more rough seas and "abnormally high tides" along the NSW coast.


The storm brought down power lines and cut electricity to 25,000 homes and businesses in Sydney, the central coast and the Hunter.

Ausgrid crews were working to restore power to the remaining 1000 homes in Sydney this morning.

Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino said the winds would ease in Sydney today as the weather system moved north.

"For Sydney the wind will greatly ease throughout the day, but we can expect a few showers," he said.

"What's been causing it is a complex low pressure system which is located on the Tasman Sea, that has been [bringing] very strong winds and a band of heavy rain along the coast."

He said Sydney had received about a third of its average June rainfall in the first six days of the month.

The Transport Management Centre said Cronulla to Bundeena ferries were also cancelled this morning, while the Wakehurst Parkway on the northern beaches was closed due to flooding at Oxford Falls.

Traffic lights were also blacked out at the intersection of Princes Highway and Waratah Street at Kirrawee.

Exploring the outback one bounce at a time

After announcing tens of thousands of 360-degree panorama pictures of the Great Barrier Reef in Google Maps earlier this year and launching Street View imagery for the Amazon last week, one of the final frontiers we have yet to bring to your favourite computing device has been the Australian outback. One of our top requests from our users is the ability to roam the vast Australian continent. Unfortunately, the remoteness of the outback has posed a challenge for our traditional Street View cars and trikes.

Today, we’re happy to announce that Google has found an innovative way to capture a special collection of images from the back of beyond to include in Google Street View.

Over the next four weeks, more than a thousand Big Red kangaroos will be equipped with a 360-degree head camera that will automatically capture images when the marsupial is on the move during daylight hours.

Cervantes, a small town 250km north of Perth, Western Australia is the host to the annual windsurfing speedsailing event "Cervantes Speed 2011", held this year over the weekend of 26/27th November 2011. This event has been run by us (Windsurfing Perth) for years and supported by Neil Pryde. Speeds are measured by radar gun on the Saturday and a marathon with all competitors is held on the Sunday from one side of the bay to the other.

Australian homeowners set for million pound bonus from mining

Port Hedland locals are turning down multimillion dollar offers on their homes from BHP Billiton, which is looking to redevelop the town’s harbour entrance.

According to The West Australian BHP is planning to build a tugboat pen in the harbour but its plans have been stalled by locals who refuse to sell their land.Port Hedland resident Darryl Brown, a local since 1964, told The West Australian BHP offered him $2.9 million for his harbour-front home but he had no intention of selling.

Jan Ford of Jan Ford Real Estate in Port Hedland said Brown’s property was worth “substantially more” than BHP’s offer.She told the West Australian she would feel “quite comfortable” paying $5 million for his home. A spokesperson for BHP said it had approached Brown about the sale but the process was normal.”BHP Billiton Iron Ore owns a significant property portfolio in Hedland in support of its Pilbara operations,” they said.

“BHP regularly adds to this property portfolio to further support its operational needs.”

Property values in Australia’s mining regions continue to demand high prices as local towns struggle to keep pace with expansions in the industry.

Banting And Fitzgibbons Claim Inaugural Australian Open Of Surfing Titles

MANLY, NSW/Australia (Sunday, 19 February, 2012) – Matt Banting (AUS) and Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) have taken out the Inaugural Australian Open of Surfing Pro presented by Hurley and Billabong at Manly beach today. The beach was packed with tens of thousands of surf fans for the final day of competition and they were treated to an exciting show with close back-and-forth battles, powerful turns and big airs as the world’s best surfers fought for the prestigious crown, precious ASP World Tour ratings points and tens of thousands of dollars prize-money.

Matt Banting (AUS) went back-to-back at the Australian Open of Surfing after claiming the Pro Junior division title yesterday and today winning the blue ribbon ASP 6-Star division. Banting battled hard in the Final against American Evan Gieselman (USA), with both surfers going for broke in the small, but fun surf. The 17-year-old from Port Macquarie took to the air and landed some massive air-reverses that saw him post some big scores and claim the USD$25,000 1st prize and 3,500 ASP World Tour ratings points.

“This has been the best week of my life!” Banting said. “I’m so happy, this is the best feeling I’ve ever had! I’m shaking so much I can hardly talk. Evan (Gieselman) is a really good surfer, he was blowing up for the whole final, I was really scared. I was just lucky to start off well with a couple of good waves. I just want to thanks my Dad and Mum for supporting me, I love them!”

Evan Gieselman (USA) scored his best ever result at an ASP 6-Star event with his runner-up finish at the Australian Open today. Gieselman took down some big names on the road to the Final with his lethal aerial game, but fell just short in the Final losing by just over one point.

“It was a good match-up, it was really fun surfing against Matt,” Gieselman said. “I really want to congratulate him, he surfed really well, and found a couple of good rights that let him do a couple of airs. I would have loved to have won, but 2nd is a great result. I’m doing the whole ASP Star Series this year and I’m looking to qualify for the ASP World Title Series at the end of the year, so this is a great start for me.”

Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) defeated Sofia Mulanovich (PER) in the final of the ASP 6-Star rated Australian Open Of Surfing, both surfers posted decent scores, but Fitzgibbons timed her turns to perfection to take out the event and claim the USD$8,000 winners cheque. Fitzgibbons has been in fantastic form all event, being rewarded by the judges for her ability to link turns together with her trademark smooth style. This week at the Australian Open Of Surfing Fitzgibbons notched four of the top 10 wave scores and two of the top three heat totals, proving that she was the inform surfer of the event and that she’s not being hampered by her wrist injury.

“It’s unbelievable!” Fitzgibbons said. “I was just focusing on working through my boards and going through some heats and before I know it I’m in the final. Sofia (Mulanovich) is such a tough competitor, I knew she’d be able to get the score needed, so it was a nervous wait at the end there. To win in front of this crowd, with so much support feels amazing! Then to have won the US Open and then the first ever Australian Open back to back is a special achievement.”

Burleigh Single Fin Classic Spreads SunWise Message

WEDNESDAY 11TH JANUARY 2012: SUNCORP and Surfing Australia were busy across the weekend, spreading the SunWise message at the Burleigh Single Fin Classic on the Gold Coast.

Sixty four surfers contested the tournament - young and old came out to play in the Burleigh surf with ages ranging from 11 years through to 50 years.

The Suncorp SunWise crew provided hats, sunscreen and water to the visitors of the Suncorp shade bar and educated surfing enthusiasts on the dangers of sun exposure.

A Suncorp SunWise UV wristband that indicates what the UV level is was also distributed.

Cabarita surfboard shaper, Jason Jameson, made the most of choppy conditions to beat a hot field of surfers.

The final was contested in choppy conditions in half to one metre waves dotted by bluebottles which converged in their thousands onto Burleigh Heads.

The 20-year-old Cabarita surfboard shaper defied a hot field and the presence of a huge swarm of bluebottles to win the prestigious tournament on count back from Burleigh Heads' Noah Lane, while third place in the six men final went to Lane's club mate, Kyle Robinson.

Burleigh's Ryan Grey finished fourth, defending champion, Clint Kimmins (Snapper Rocks) was fifth and Cabarita's Brent Savage wound up in sixth place.

Since joining forces with Surfing Australia in January 2010, Suncorp have helped remind over 100,000 Aussie beachgoers of the importance of being sun safe and provided much needed shade and sunscreen at surfing events.
